How we made this map
The topics, areas, fields and domains come from OpenAlex, an open catalogue of research. We link two topics when the same papers keep carrying both: the more of each topic's papers (published since 2015) that also carry the other, the stronger the link. Each topic keeps its strongest links.
We placed the hexagons from those links too, putting the fields that share the most work next to each other, and the same for areas and topics inside them. Treat distance on the map as rough.
We left out 52 of OpenAlex's topics because they collect unrelated papers (names like “Diverse Academic Research Areas”). Because topics come from what researchers publish, everyday practice and the humanities are thinner here than in life. Graphs built from textbooks and other sources fill those in next.
